Dallas-Based Johnson Products Company Continues Philanthropic Legacy of Historymaker, Comer Cottrell, This Holiday Season

JPC’s Renee Cottrell-Brown and Eric Brown Give Over $50,000 to Local and National

Nonprofits at December 9 Community Luncheon in Dallas.

 

DALLAS, TX – November 12, 2010: After the acquisition of Johnson Products Company, Inc. (JPC), led by the daughter of Comer Cottrell, Renee Cottrell Brown, and his son-in-law Eric Brown, a year and a half ago, JPC will host its first community luncheon on December 9 at its headquarters to show the Dallas community that JPC is here to stay.  In the philanthropic spirit of well-known Dallas legend, Comer Cottrell, Eric and Renee will publicly award over $50,000 to Dallas-based Ina Mae Greene Foundation, Genesis Women’s Shelter and the local chapter of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). Hosted by veteran broadcast journalist and former NBC-5 anchor woman Ramona Logan, JPC’s community luncheon event will publicly communicate the company’s current and future generosity to the Dallas community and will also feature speakers Comer Cottrell, Diane Stevens (UNCF), Jan Langbein (Genesis Women’s Shelter), Darlene Greene (Ina Mae Greene Foundation) and Texas State Senator Royce West (D-Dallas).

“My father, Comer Cottrell, strongly believes in giving back to his community.  I grew up seeing him serve on the boards of the Urban League and Bishop College, as well as purchase and restore the 131-acre HBCU Bishop College campus and transfer it to A.M.E. Paul Quinn College,” explains Renee Cottrell Brown, Executive Vice-President of Sales and Marketing for Johnson Products Company.  “Eric and I feel strongly about continuing my father’s legacy, especially in the Dallas community.  Our gifts to the Ina Mae Greene Foundation, Genesis Women’s Shelter and the UNCF  are just the beginning of what we believe is our responsibility to help those in need as well as improve our community as a whole.”

The “new” JPC was bought back from Procter & Gamble by Eric and Renee Brown on March 31, 2009.  The husband and wife management team has extensive experience in the hair care arena with the Pro-Line Corporation founded by Renee Brown’s father, Comer Cottrell. Johnson Products focuses on strategic brand and business development in the ethnic hair care market. The company has been a leading brand in the African American community for more than a half-century and currently offers more than 60 hair care products under the Gentle Treatment® and Ultra Sheen® brands.

This fall, JPC broadened its philanthropic efforts with its national No Excuse! Stop the Abuse! initiative in support of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  For a second year in a row, JPC used its signature brand, Gentle Treatment,® to increase awareness of the issue of domestic abuse of women of color as well as empower women to take a stand against this type of treatment.  The No Excuse! Stop the Abuse! initiative consists of JPC’s support of women’s shelters and foundations with multiyear grants, customized events and the national distribution of Gentle Treatment® No Excuse! Stop the Abuse!™ purple bracelets inside specially marked relaxer kits.  At the same time, additional bracelets were distributed at 1,160 Sally Beauty stores.  With every purchase of a special marked Gentle Treatment® No-Lye Conditioning Crème Relaxer kit, JPC is donating $1 to benefit shelters and foundations that serve, save and improve the lives of domestic abuse victims. The company also launched a Website (www.johnsonproducts.com/noexcuse) to provide resources as well as promote a national campaign to highlight Gentle Treatment® “Sheroes.”  Last month, JPC awarded Chicago-based, Family Rescue Center Inc., a women’s shelter, with a 5-year grant of $25,000.

“According to the U.S. Department of Justice, approximately 1.3 million women are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the United States. Sometimes the first step in seeking help is confiding in a trusted friend or family member that you are a victim of domestic abuse,” explains Darlene Greene, founder of the Ina Mae Greene Foundation. “Knowing that someone is there to support you when you decide to leave your abuser can give you the courage you need to start your new life; Johnson Products Company’s No Excuse! Stop the Abuse!™ initiative can be a resource for victims as well as for family members.”

DALLAS, TX – November 15, 2010: After hitting the ground running with the acquisition of Johnson Products Company, Inc. (JPC) in 2009, JPC, led by Renee Cottrell Brown, and Eric Brown, will host its first community luncheon on December 9 at its headquarters to officially introduce the company to its new Dallas home base.

In the philanthropic spirit of well-known Dallas legend, Comer Cottrell, the Browns will publicly award over $50,000 to Dallas-based Ina Mae Greene Foundation, Genesis Women’s Shelter and the local chapter of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).

Featured speakers will be Comer Cottrell, Diane Stevens (UNCF), Jan Langbein (Genesis Women’s Shelter), Darlene Greene (Ina Mae Greene Foundation) and Texas State Senator Royce West (D-Dallas).  Veteran TV anchor Ramona Logan will emcee.

The New Johnson Products Company, now headquartered in Dallas, will host a luncheon Dec. 9 at the JPC headquarters when over $50,000 will be awarded to pre-selected nonprofits.  The new owners, led by Eric and Renee Brown, will award $50,000 to nonprofits.
