Anthony Adds Celebrity to Company’s First Grooming Collection For Men

N.Y. Knicks Mega Star Carmleo Anthony

New York, NY – April 6, 2011: NBA Star Carmelo Anthony has just inked a multiyear deal as the corporate spokesperson for Johnson Products Company, Inc. (JPC), known as one of the most pioneering ethnic hair care companies in the world. JPC has entered the men’s grooming arena with the Fall 2010 launch of Ultra Sheen® Men.™ Building on the company’s legacy and expertise in the African American ethnic hair market, JPC is continuing to reinvent itself and introduce new brands with innovative formulas and products that meet the needs of today’s multicultural consumer. The Ultra Sheen® Men™ grooming collection is targeted to the trendsetting man who has style and swagger. Today, no one better exudes the “trendsetting man” than NBA All-Star, Carmelo Anthony, who has signed on to lend his voice and celebrity to the Ultra Sheen® Men™ line.

The Ultra Sheen® Men™ brand promotes to fashion focused men that they should always “Step Up Their Game.” In doing so, a man can “get noticed” for his high standard of style and fashion. The Ultra Sheen® Men™ grooming collection includes Ultra Sheen® Men™ Super Hold Hair Dress, Ultra Sheen® Men™ Wave Conditioning Pomade, Ultra Sheen® Men™ Lite Crème Moisturizer with Shea Butter, and the Ultra Sheen® Men™ Grooming Gel.

“We are very excited to leverage the strong position in the ethnic hair care space that Johnson Products has to launch our new men’s line. Our team sees a lot of opportunity and growth in the men’s sector which doesn’t typically get a lot of attention,” explained JPC CEO, Eric Brown. “Adding Carmelo Anthony to the Johnson Products Family as well as having him represent the Ultra Sheen® Men™ brand to the community will certainly bring excitement to our new brand.”

Bringing excitement and innovating the ethnic hair care industry is not new to JPC. In fact, JPC has been a part of the fabric of the African American community for more than five decades. With a vision and a borrowed $500, George Ellis Johnson, a former shoeshine boy, created Johnson Products Company and turned it into a multimillion-dollar business. Founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1954, Johnson Products Company remains an iconic brand in the African American community. By 1960, the Ultra Sheen® product line was introduced into the wider retail market. In 1971, the company became the first African American firm to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. At the same time, Johnson Products Company became the first sponsors of “Soul Train,” the first nationally syndicated television program for African Americans. Over their 55-year history, Johnson Products Company created 53 hair care products under the Ultra Sheen® and Gentle Treatment® brands.

JPC’s partnership with Carmelo Anthony is the first of its kind for the new management team at JPC. On March 31, 2009, JPC was successfully acquired from Procter & Gamble with the combined investments of RC Fontis, St. Cloud Capital and Plus Factor, LLC, an African American management team. In two years, the new team at JPC has successfully reorganized the company and its worldwide distribution. This deal with Carmelo Anthony is a part of the company’s strategic plan to regain its prominent global market share. The deal will feature Mr. Anthony in advertising and promotional campaigns, cause-marketing and community outreach programs as well as in personal appearances for JPC and Ultra Sheen® Men™. Mr. Anthony will also be involved in the development of innovative new grooming products for JPC.

“I am very excited about joining the team at Johnson Products Company. I have fond memories of Ultra Sheen® products from my childhood days and they have such a long-standing and rich reputation that it was very easy for me to agree to be a part of this new effort,” said Carmelo Anthony. “Being a part of the Ultra Sheen® Men™ launch and influencing young men to ‘Step Up Their Game’ in every aspect of their lives is truly what I am all about.”

DALLAS, TX: January 26, 2011 – Johnson Products Company (JPC) leads the helm in digital innovation within the ethnic hair care category with the launch of two custom interactive Facebook applications this month.  JPC’s Insider Rewards and Friends with Benefits are interactive social extensions of the company’s existing JPC and Ultra Sheen® Men Facebook pages.

“JPC’s 360 degree marketing platform allows us to reach our consumers everywhere they are. Our new Facebook apps will now allow us to set the highest standard for digital promotion and innovation,” explains Renee Cottrell-Brown, executive vice president of sales and marketing. “It’s important that we continually engage our consumers in fun, new ways to coincide with the launch of new products and promotions.”

JPC’s Insider Rewards and Friends with Benefits applications take the form of social gaming experiences inside the most robust and widely used social networking platform in the world.  The applications take advantage of the Facebook core feature set and enhance them through a unique user experience that is strengthened by the company’s brands.

As a loyalty community within a community, Insider Rewards allows users to build a relationship with the JPC brands and stay informed of special giveaways, contests and promotions.  When users join the rewards community, they can chat with other “Insiders” and participate in “Get the Style.” This feature encourages users to upload a photo of their best hairstyle and “like” other photos to accumulate points toward incentives such as free product samples.

Another benefit of the application is the Brand Ambassador component in which “Insiders” can further increase their level of participation.  JPC Brand Ambassadors have the option to sign up to attend in-store promotions or other events in their local market area and serve as brand advocates.  The concept emerged from the need to create a talent vault wherein JPC’s Great Model Search® contestants maintain the opportunity to interact with the JPC brand family.

Ultra Sheen® Men™ Friends with Benefits is a dynamic, high impact application using innovative animation and sound design to bring young consumers into the new Ultra Sheen® Men™ brand launched late last year. Users can secretly select friends they want to get to know from their existing list of Facebook friends. If there is a match, both parties receive an email notification and can virtually get to know each other better.  The application goes viral when users share the app with their friends.

“In order to compete in a global economy, brands have to find new ways to integrate their products and services into the daily lives of consumers – JPC understands this well,” explains Seth Silver, CEO and co-founder of Los Angeles-based Social Control, JPC’s digital agency of record. “By developing revolutionary applications of this nature for brand engagement, Johnson Products demonstrates an understanding of the inner workings of the digital ecosystem and how social media plays a key role in building relationships with modern consumers,” says Silver.

Dallas-Based Johnson Products Company Donates Close to $100,000 to Local and National Nonprofits at
December 9 Community Luncheon
JPC’s Renee Cottrell-Brown and Eric Brown Recognized by City and State Officials for Company’s Generosity to the Dallas Community.

DALLAS, TX – December 14, 2010: Last week, Dallas City Councilwoman, Delia Jasso, and the office of Texas State Senator Royce West, recognized Renee Cottrell-Brown, Eric Brown and Johnson Products Company (JPC) for their generosity in supporting local and national nonprofits at the company’s December 9 community luncheon. Hosted by Ramona Logan, veteran journalist and president of Image Advantage, JPC’s luncheon celebrated the Dallas community and awarded over $50,000 to the Ina Mae Greene Foundation, Genesis Women’s Shelter and the United Negro College Fund of North Texas. The event also promoted JPC’s national initiative, No Excuse! Stop the Abuse! ™ which focuses on domestic violence awareness and uses one of JPC’s signature brands, Gentle Treatment®, as its platform.

The No Excuse! Stop the Abuse! ™ initiative launched for a second year at the Family Rescue Center in Chicago, Illinois, the birthplace of JPC. JPC awarded the women’s shelter with their second installment of their $25,000 grant at a luncheon in October during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Last year, JPC built the Gentle Treatment® Beauty Center, a first of its kind, in the Family Rescue Center. In all, with the local and national donations, JPC has donated close to $100,000 to show the company’s commitment to the community and its responsibility to help those in need.

“Johnson Products Company’s commitment is already making a significant impact on the programs we have at the Ina Mae Greene Foundation. We now can offer bus passes, gas cards and other vital necessities to women who are turning their lives around for the better for themselves and their families,” explained Darlene Greene, founder and executive director of the Ina Mae Greene Foundation.

“Renee and Eric truly are shining lights in the Dallas community. Their commitment to raise awareness of domestic abuse is commendable. The Genesis Women’s Shelter is honored to be supported by the Johnson Products Family,” said Jan Langbein, executive director of the Genesis Women’s Shelter.
